The GM MY 1968 Chevrolet Corvette would have already had been on the showroom floors for about 9 months by then! This story will still work though as a reference to the 1969 MY Corvette model. But, in 2018 Mattel themselves stated the first to market Hot Wheels were first distributed in May 1968. Implying the Custom Corvette was one of the 10 Custom Hot Wheels released in June of 1967 (?) as it is often referenced elsewhere. The on going legend is that Harry still knew how to access the GM Design Center's Cafeteria - after hours! As such Hot Wheels is often said to have debuted their casting design before the 1968 Chevrolet Corvette hit the show room floors. It is often referred to as the Shark or C3 model. His design is based on Chevrolet's 3rd iteration of their iconic Corvette sports car. It is similar to the later Corvette Stingray casting, which was based on a 1980's Corvette. This casting is modeled after a 1975 Corvette.
